Trans and non-binary identities meet existential-phenomenological therapy

Trans people are those who are not content to remain the gender they were assigned at birth – this may include people who identify as male; as female; as some elements of both in a fixed manner; as a fluid identity moving between genders; or as no gender at all.

The existential-phenomenological position on trans – indeed on gender and sexuality more broadly – has not always been helpful to these groups of people, as it too often becomes stuck on the issue of whether such things are immutable givens or not.

In this workshop, Christina Richards will consider how we might helpfully work with trans people in therapeutic practice within the existential-phenomenological tradition.

She will briefly cover some of the neurological and social literature before turning to possible interventions people might seek, including hormones, surgeries, and legal changes. This will serve to underpin discussion of therapeutic interventions around issues such as transition, lifespan development, sexuality and relationships.

Christina Richards is an accredited psychotherapist with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, whom she represents to NHS England’s Clinical Reference Group on Gender Identity Services. She is Senior Specialist Psychology Associate at the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Gender Clinic, and Clinical Research Fellow at West London Mental Health NHS Trust (Charing Cross) Gender Clinic. She lectures and publishes on trans, sexualities and critical mental health, and is a co-founder of BiUK and co-author of the Bisexuality Report. She is the Editor of the journal Counselling Psychology Review. Her own publications consist of various papers, reports, and book chapters including co-authoring the BPS Guidelines and Literature Review for Counselling Sexual and Gender Minority Clients, and jointly editing a forthcoming book, Genderqueer and Non-Binary Genders
