CPD Workshop – March 2016
Society of Existential Analysis, Continuing Professional Development Workshop, Saturday March 5th 2016, 10am to 1pm.
Presented by Martin Adams:
Towards an existential understanding of human development
How do existential givens such as time, death, freedom and the lived body influence our development from birth to death? And what do they mean at different times of our lives?
This workshop will consider human development through the whole life span from an existential perspective.
Theories of human development from other therapeutic approaches are essentialist and therefore blind to existential context. And existential approaches have largely neglected the topic of human development.
In this workshop, we will consider how an existential theory of human development differs from other theories. We will argue that an existential understanding of human development is necessary for the therapist to better understand their client’s issues.
The contributions of Merleau-Ponty, Sartre and Heidegger among others will be considered, and suggestions will be made about implications for therapeutic practice.
The workshop will combine lecture input with participatory exercises and open discussion. These will necessarily draw on participants’ personal and therapeutic experience. Participation has been limited to 25 places.
